In Course Bursaries
Bursaries,
Work Study and Need Based Awards are three of the financial
need-based programs offered by Western. In order to be
considered for all of these programs, or any combination
of these programs, students must complete the Financial
Assistance Profile application, located in the Services
section. This application includes consideration for
all Bursaries, and all Need-Based Awards offered by Western,
as well as eligibility for the Work Study program. Students
can submit the application only one time per year.
The information below applies to students in second
year or above of an undergraduate or professional program,
and students registered in the Faculty of Education.
Graduate Students can obtain information on how to
apply for the Graduate
Student Bursary at the Graduate
Bursary page. First year students in undergraduate
or professional programs can obtain information on
how to apply for the financial need based programs
at the Admission Bursary page.

Bursaries
are non-repayable, taxable grants that are awarded on the
basis of financial need.
Bursaries supplement students’ primary
sources of funding such as OSAP, bank loans/lines of
credit and parental/spousal contributions. Financial need
is determined
in a manner similar to the Canada and Ontario Student
Loans assessment. It involves assessing the costs of the
program
that students are registered in or are applying for,
and any available resources.
It is the principle
of Western’s Student Financial Services
Office that no qualified student will be unable to attend or
be required to withdraw from a program at Western for financial
reasons. Funding available for need-based undergraduate student
assistance, which is allocated through the bursary and Work
Study programs amounts to over $13 million. These funds are
derived largely from the required tuition set-aside revenues
from tuition fee increases and are supplemented by other sources
such as private donations, the University’s institutional
funds, and special targeted government funds.
Bursaries funded
through private donations and special targeted government
programs have terms directed by the donors that
range from very open criteria to very restricted. Bursaries
funded through tuition set aside and the University’s
institutional funds can be used for any student in financial
need. Refer to the Registrar Web site at award search to obtain
information on individual terms of Bursaries available at UWO.
Although there are many different available bursaries, only
one application is required for consideration for all bursaries.
To be eligible for bursary assistance, students must:
- Be
a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident
- Be
registered at main campus, in a full or part time program
- Demonstrate
genuine financial need
Application Deadlines
To be
considered for need based awards, students

Financial
Assistance Profile Application (FAP)
The Bursary, Work Study and Need Based Award programs are all based on financial
need. By submitting one Financial Assistance Profile Application, students
can be considered for all three programs; students can choose if they wish
to be
considered for one or more of the programs when beginning the application process.
The eligibility requirements differ slightly from one program to the next,
therefore students are encouraged to read through the information for each
of these programs in order to determine
which programs are suitable to their needs.
