Distance Studies
Distance Studies occurs when learners are separated from the instructor and classmates, whether across the hall or across the province. Unlike the courses of the past that depended entirely on written communication through the mail, today’s distance courses may include multimedia materials and often take advantage of the Web-based communication technologies. Western’s Distance Studies on-line courses will let you pursue university studies if you cannot attend regular classes. This form of instruction allows you both time and place flexibility to meet your educational objectives.
Taking Distance Studies at Western
Distance Studies courses are available both to students at Western and to students enrolled at other Canadian universities, who may take a Distance Studies course through Western when they obtain a letter of permission from their home university.
If you require information or aid in applying to Western for either full-time or part-time studies, please visit the Admissions website. For more details for part-time students, click here for information on available degrees (pdf).
If you are interested in taking courses at Western on a Letter of Permission from another university, click here to learn about Visiting Students.
Fall Winter 2011-2012
Welcome to Distance Studies online courses! All online courses offered via Distance Studies for Fall/Winter 2011-2012 will use WebCT OWL. Much like an on-campus course, you must prepare yourself for the upcoming term. Instead of buying supplies and finding class locations, you will need to prepare your computer so it will be reliable and allow you to complete your course.
You will not have access to your course in WebCT OWL until Thursday, September 8, 2011.
Students registered in second term half courses will have access in WebCT OWL on Monday, January 9, 2012.
To order your textbooks, visit the Bookstore’s website.
For information on computer requirements and accessing your WebCT OWL, check out the Accessing Your Courses page.
For information on new courses available this year, view our Course Offerings.
