International Student Scholarship Information

Western recognizes the academic achievement of international students through our scholarship programs. 

Admission Scholarships

International applicants applying directly from secondary school for admission to Western’s main campus for first year, full-time studies can be considered for Admission Scholarships.

Western Admission Scholarships (These are unlimited in number and are awarded automatically in September to all qualified first year students)

Eligibility for our unlimited Western Admission Scholarships is based on successful completion of the secondary school diploma and on the student’s final admission average, including prerequisite courses, as calculated by Western for the program to which the student has confirmed acceptance. No application is required for consideration.  Western will determine averages for applicants who are not studying in a Canadian secondary school curriculum based on: curriculum, grading practices, and grading scale interpretation.

Official notification for the Western Admission Scholarships will be emailed to eligible students in late August.  Below are the Western Admission Scholarships available:

Continuing Admission Scholarship 95% + $10,000 ($2,500/yr for 4 years)
Western Scholarship of Excellence 90 – 94.9% $2,000 1 yr
Western Scholarship of Distinction 88 – 89.9% $1,000 1 yr

National Scholarship Program

International President's Entrance Scholarships - 3 at $50,000 ($10,000 annually, plus $10,000 towards first year residence costs)

National Scholarships are designed to recognize all-round excellence. They are awarded on the basis of outstanding academic performance to candidates who demonstrate ability for creative and innovative thought and a passion for the pursuit of learning. National Scholarships also recognize exceptional achievement in extracurricular activities such as the arts and athletics. A special emphasis is placed on a candidate's commitment to community service through ongoing contributions to school and community life.

International students (students who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada) who are applying to Western's main campus directly from secondary school or equivalent, are eligible to be considered for the International President's Entrance Scholarships offered through the National Scholarship Program.  Please note that an application is required for this scholarship program.  For more information and to access the online application please visit the National Scholarship Program webpage.

Other Admission Scholarships for International Students

In addition to the unlimited Western Admission Scholarships listed above, there are admission scholarships available that are specifically for international students beginning full-time first year studies at Western’s main campus.  These other admission scholarships for international students are created by donors and vary in value and criteria.  Please note that these international student scholarships can be awarded in combination with a Western Admission Scholarship or may replace a Western Admission Scholarship.

How to be considered:

In order to be considered for this special pool of Admission Scholarships for international students, a complete admission application submitted through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC), and all supporting documentation must be received by Western by March 15th.   Recipient selection for these international student Admission Scholarships will be made from the eligible candidates who have completed the admission application process by the March 15th deadline, so that the recipients can be notified about their scholarship prior to arriving at Western.

Scholarships for Upper Year Students (beyond first year)

Once international students have completed one year of studies at Western's main campus they become eligible for consideration for In-Course Scholarships and Awards offered to upper year students.  In-Course Scholarships and Awards are given out based on a student’s previous performance at Western as well as their current registration.
