Choose your Courses - Plan your Schedule

Be strategic in how you select your courses to ensure you meet your course, progression and degree requirements.

Use Draft My Schedule to help you build an individual conflict-free class schedule.

Log into Student Center or Draft My Schedule.

Note: This tool does not import your course selections into your Student Center.  It allows you to create and play with your preferred timetable in order to prepare for course registration in Student Center.

Refer to the Western Academic Calendar for academic information, such as module/program requirements and course descriptions.

  Things to consider:

  • Module/Program requirements such as admission, course, and progression requirements. Follow the requirements for the academic year (term) that you started the module/program. View Previous Western Calendars
  • Course requirements such as prerequisites and antirequisites.
Pay attention to the order of when you take courses.
Keep track of antirequisites so you do not risk losing credit for a course.

For example:

Antireq information

Note any progression or degree requirements that need to be completed.
  • Access to Courses: There may be extra enrollment conditions that restrict or delay your access to register in courses. Review the Enrollment Conditions/Enrollment Constraints section below for more details.

Enrollment Conditions/Enrollment Constraints

There may be extra enrollment conditions that restrict or delay your access to register in courses. These conditions are referred to as enrollment constraints.

Refer to the Notes section in Draft My Schedule or when registering for a course to review the enrollment conditions for the course. Note: When a priority constraint changes, the course registration system will not be available on the priority change dates. Refer to the Register in Courses section below for the priority change dates.

There are two types of constraints:

Priority - A temporary constraint that limits registration to a particular group of students (i.e. students at a particular Campus or in a specific module/program) for a specific period of time. A priority may change for each enrollment period on specific dates.

Restriction - A constraint that limits registration to a particular group for the duration of the course registration period.

Register in Courses

Course registration for the Fall/Winter term begins in June or July. To register in courses, you need an enrollment appointment.

You can view your enrollment appointment in Student Center > Enrollment Dates > Details.

An email will be sent to your Western email account once your enrollment appointment time has been assigned, approximately 2 to 3 days before your Fall/Winter enrollment start date.

Course registration occurs over three enrollment periods for the Fall/Winter term. While you may register in courses in all three periods, the enrollment conditions for courses may differ in each period.

  1. Priority Enrollment Period
  2. Adjustment Enrollment Period
  3. General Enrollment Period

Priority Enrollment Period: July 6 – July 28
Access to course registration during the priority enrollment period begins with your enrollment appointment. Enrollment appointments are determined by your academic level/year of study and are assigned in the following order: Year 4 students, Year 3 students, Year 2 students. Year 1 students are assigned an enrollment appointment for a specific Year 1 start date (usually a Saturday), refer to the New Students section for details.

Enrollment appointments will be assigned within these date ranges for the Fall/Winter 2020 term:

Year 4: July 6 to July 10
Year 3: July 13 to July 17
Year 2: July 20 to July 24

Check your Western email account for your specific enrollment appointment time.

Your enrollment appointment time is the earliest date and time you can access course registration. Until this date/time is reached, you will not be able to register in courses in Student Center.

After your enrollment appointment begins, you can continue to register in courses until the end of the Fall/Winter course registration period (last day to add a course). Note: Online course registration ends after the last day to add the course.  After the online registration period ends, use a course change form to drop a course. Consult your Faculty Academic Counselling Office for more information.

Exception: While your enrollment appointment is valid until the last day to add, your access to course registration will be temporarily suspended while course adjustments occur. See “Adjustment Enrollment Period” section for further information.

During the priority enrollment period students should try to register in a full course-load. Some enrollment constraints, such as priority constraints, will be in effect during the priority enrollment period.

Adjustment Enrollment Period: July 29 – August 5
After the priority enrollment period, enrollment conditions (i.e. priority constraint) will change to allow more students access to select courses. You can review when a priority constraint will expire by referring to the course registration notes.

Access to course registration will be temporarily suspended at the beginning and end of the adjustment enrollment period while these enrollment conditions are adjusted. You will not need a new enrollment appointment when access to course registration resumes.
